1951 Set of Four W199 Chairs by Walter Gropius and Ben Thompson for Thonet
This is an outstanding set of 4 W199 Birch Armchairs, designed by Walter Gropius and Ben Thompson for Thonet in 1951. They were produced in Austria in the early 1950s and the listed price includes the set of 4 chairs. Gropius was a co-founder of the Bauhaus school and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Their design features bent birch plywood legs. The finish on these chairs has achieved a beautiful aged patina.
Each armchair measures 21 inches deep, 25.5 inches wide, and is 29.5 inches high. Their seat is 18 inches from the floor. They show myriad signs of age and use, with several scratches and scuffs. Overall, these truly scarce chairs are in good condition. Please see photos.
