SOLD 1956 Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman 670 671 with Boot Glides Tan
Listed for sale is a gorgeous and very rare 670 & 671 lounge chair with ottoman (known as the Eames lounge chair), produced by Herman Miller and designed by Ray and Charles Eames. This example is a 1956 production example, which features slip-on boot glides on the ottoman. Moreover, it also has unique and very rare tan leather, which distinguishes it in terms of rarity from other 1956 examples. Most others were produced in black leather and thus, those with other leather colors are exceedingly rare.
As far as condition, the set is a lovely original piece, with Brazilian rosewood veneer. The rosewood panels are in very nice condition and could benefit from oil to bring out the grain. If desired, we can do this prior to shipping, though we did not want to touch it before consulting the new owner, as the finish appears to be original. The leather is in nice shape, showing a lovely patina. There is some notable wear on the ottoman cushion, which is quite typical for pieces of this vintage. There do not appear to be notable rips or tears to any of the cushions. The seat cushion may have been replaced at one point, as the leather feels slightly more fresh, though the color matches nicely. Based on others, it looks like it was ordered in the 1960's from Herman Miller, likely due to excessive wear on the seat.
As far as assigning a date to this piece, the early production can be confirmed with a number of details. Most notably, this example has Herman Miller's white round medallion, which was used from the mid to late 1950's. It also then has an ottoman base, which is un-drilled and un-threaded with slip on "boot glides." These were used during 1956 and were soon changed, as customers would lose the boots and thus, adjustable threaded glides were used instead. This example also has down-filled cushions and early screw configuration under the arms.
