1963 Gordon Bunshaft's Personal Mies van der Rohe Flat Bar Brno Chair
This is a Brno Armchair, model MR50, initially designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich in 1929. This particular example was produced by Knoll in 1963. The design features a flat, polished stainless-steel frame, utilized throughout the silhouette on both the arms and at the cantilever base. The flat-bar construction was a novel idea to emerge at the time, as the tubular stylings of the Bauhaus had but recently established themselves as the mode de-rigueur.
This particular example was Gordon Bunshaft's personal chair. It will be accompanied by a letter of authentication and provenance from the family that inherited it from Nina and Gordon Bunshaft. This came from the East Hampton home of Gordon and Nina Bunshaft, referred to as The Travertine House.
The chair measures 22.5 inches deep, 22.75 inches wide, and 31.5 inches high with a seat height of 17.5 inches. The steel frame is in good original condition with some scratches, and the leather upholstery has some marks and scratches. Overall, this chair is in good vintage condition showing wear.
