1960 Set of Eight Gordon Bunshaft and Davis Allen of SOM Dining Chairs w/ Fabric
This is a set of eight bespoke cafeteria chairs, designed in the 1960s by Gordon Bunshaft and Davis Allen of SOM (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Architects). The chairs have boxy, hand-polished stainless steel bases, and they have fabric upholstered seats and backs. They appear to have come from the Equitable-Life Assurance Society, having been matched to original drawings as the "Cafeteria Chair." They are extraordinarily rare and special examples. We have robust provenance as context that will accompany the chairs in the sale.
Each chair measures 18 inches deep, 20.25 inches wide, and 30.75 inches high. They have a seat height of 18.5 inches. We have intentionally left the set in its original condition to show appreciation for their history. The grasscloth fabric shows signs of use and age including rips and discoloration, and the bases show patina. Please see photos.
