1950s Klaus Grabe C5 Chaise Lounge Chair in White Plywood, 21x61x27.5", USA
This is a C5 Chaise Lounge Chair, initially designed by Klaus Grabe in 1948. This example dates to the 1950s. Grabe was a German designer who was trained at the Bauhaus and left Germany in the 1930s for Mexico. Here Grabe worked together with fellow Bauhaus students Van Beuren and Webb, under the banner of the Domus company. In the 1940s, Grabe moved to New York where he started his own company. His designs in the 1950s, like this chaise, were based on the new material plywood and were marketed as "prefab kits" to be assembled by the owners to keep the purchase price down.
This piece measures 63 inches deep, 22 inches wide, and 25 inches high. It has a seat height of 12 inches. There is a dark blemish on the side of the chaise, and there are some minor scrapes and blemishes on the top surface. Overall, this lounge is in good vintage condition. Please see photos.
