1950 Herman Miller Eames Zenith RAR Rocking Chair with Yellow Fiberglass Shell
his is a ‘RAR’ Rocking Chair, designed by Ray and Charles Eames in 1950. This early example retains its Zenith Plastics/Herman Miller decal under the seat. We can date this “ankle breaker” example to early 1950. The design was produced this way for but a few months before they realized that the design flat of the front weld pattern would hurt the user’s ankles with regular use. It is a favorite of collectors because of this unusual little anecdote.
The chair consists of a dark yellow fiberglass “shell” seat and back with a rope edge, and has white painted steel legs & wooden runners. The parts are all original to the piece.
The rocking chair measures 28 inches long, 25 inches wide, and is 28 inches high. There is a beautiful patina on its fiberglass shell, with some evident discoloration, and some small scratches and dings present. The metal base shows some patina. The runners show some water stains and some slight dings, but they look great. Overall, this chair is in good condition. Please see photos.
