1960s Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Coffee Table with Bronze Base and Glass Top
This is an original Barcelona Coffee Table, initially designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1929. This vintage example dates to the 1960s and it features a custom bronze base. It is extremely rare to see the base done in Bronze, as it generally means that an architectural firm or metalworker had to obtain Mies van der Rohe's literal permission to produce it in this medium. The vast majority of authentic Barcelona table bases are in stainless steel, rendering this piece very special indeed.
The base has developed a nice patina over the years, though we can have this piece professionally re-polished if so desired. The original thick glass top is present.
During their history, we have documented that the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill used bronze examples in their projects. We believe that this was likely an example for one of their projects, with the blessing given by Mies. We can provide some documentation along with the sale about this discourse.
This table measures 39.25 inches deep and wide and stands 16 inches tall. The base shows desirable signs of age, and the glass is in excellent condition with only scant signs of use. Overall, this piece is in good condition. Please see photos.
