1949 Set of Four N19 Straight Chairs by George Nakashima for Knoll Associates in Walnut
This is a set of four N19 Straight Chairs, designed by George Nakashima for Knoll Associates in 1946. These are early examples, dating to circa 1949. The ‘Straight Chair’ was Nakashima’s modern, minimalist take on the Windsor chair. Of this set, two have been refinished, and two appear to maintain the original finish (or older finish otherwise).
Each N19 chair measures 17.5 inches long, 22.5 inches wide, and 30 inches high. They have a seat height of 17.25 inches. Nakashima intentionally chose low-sheen finishes to amplify the natural grain patterns, so this set in its current state is not too far from how the designer intented for it to be. There are some scuffs on the legs around the feet, and light marks to the wood. Overall, this set is in very good vintage condition with some light wear. Please see photos. The listed price includes all four chairs.
