1950s Merton Gershun for Dillingham 36x72 Nakashima - Like Dining Table in Birch
Listed for sale is a gorgeous extension dining table constructed from what appears to be solid birch and produced during the 1950s. It's a piece that we have owned and used personally due to its fantastic construction quality and functionality. The table when closed measures 54 inches long by 36 inches wide. The height is 30 inches. It seats six in this size quite nicely. When both 10-inch leaves are added, it becomes more suitable for 8 people or 10 more tightly.
Past sellers have attributed this to a George Nakashima for Knoll table, however, we have confirmed with Mira Nakashima that is not the case. Instead, it is a design that is highly reminiscent of early works by Nakashima for Knoll. Unlike the Knoll/Nakashima extension table, this example has leaves that are placed on each end, as opposed to being added in the middle. This visually provides balance and means there isn't a seam in the center of the table. It was recently identified by a colleague that the maker and manufacturer instead appears to be Merton Gershun for Dillingham.
As far as condition, the table was freshly sanded and refinished. Please see photos.
