1969 Davis Allen and Gordon Bunshaft of SOM Bench in Polished Stainless Steel and Suede 20 x 48
This is a Custom Rectangular Upholstered Steel Bench, designed by Davis Allen and Gordon Bunshaft under SOM. SOM, as it is known, refers to the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. During the mid to late 20th century, they were prolific in transforming corporate interiors in the US and internationally. As part of that, they would design their own furniture for various projects with their in-house interiors team. While the exact project for this is unknown, a near identical bench in a slightly different size was used for the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library. The stainless-steel base was polished to a mirror finish, and the upholstery was done in a brown suede material. The bench is quite a substantial piece. The upholstery was likely redone more recently.
This bench measures 20 inches long, 48 inches wide, and 15.5 inches high. The metal base shows some light patina and some scuffs, and the suede upholstery has some light black marks. It would be a very easy piece to reupholster, if so desired. Overall, this bench is in very good condition. Please see photos.
