SOLD 1960s X601 Stool by Aino and Alvar Aalto for Artek in Birch
This is a square X601 stool or side table created of bent birch, initially designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto for Artek in 1954. This particular example dates to the 1960s. This iteration of Aalto’s bent birch leg is created by splitting the traditional L-Leg in a longitudinal direction, and re-connecting the pieces to create an intricate fan-like design. The Aaltos favored the use of the fan shape in their architectural projects, as well as in their designs.
This stool measures 17.75 inches in length and width, and is 17.75 inches high. There are some light scuffs and scrapes on the legs and top, and the lacquered finish has achieved a warm patina. Overall, this stool is in very good condition with some wear apparent. Please see photos. It came from an exquisite estate among many other classic Scandinavian works.
