1959 Pair of Mies van der Rohe Brno Armless Chairs from Four Seasons Restaurant
This is an important pair of Custom Brno Armless Chairs, initially designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1929. These rare examples were manufactured in the US by Treitel Gratz in 1959 for The Four Seasons Restaurant in NYC. The listed price includes the pair of two chairs as shown. This pair was purchased from Wright Auction when the house was charged with selling the original furnishings from the famous Mies and Philip Johnson designed space. Their design features a bent brushed steel cantilever base, and they retain their original navy fabric upholstery. The flat bar construction was some of the first of its kind, as opposed to the tubular stylings of the Bauhaus. With its advent in 29’-30’, the design would stake its origins in the tail end of the Bauhaus period.
Each chair measures 22 inches deep, 18.5 inches wide, and 31 inches in height. The seat height is 17.5 inches. The upholstery shows some signs of use around the corners and on the seats, and there are some scuffs and scratches on the frames. Overall, this pair remains in good condition.
