1974 Pair of Cantilever Lounge Chairs from Sears Tower by Charles Pfister for Metropolitan Furniture
This is a pair of exceptionally rare lounge chairs, designed by Charles Pfister. They were produced by Metropolitan Furniture and came directly from Sears Tower, a project designed by SOM under Bruce Graham with plentiful interiors work by Jane Graham. Pfister worked on SOM's (Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill's) interiors team for 15 years before starting his own practice, so this design can be considered one of his earlier works. The chair’s tubular-steel cantilever frames are powder coated in white, and they have newer white bouclé upholstery.
Each chair measures 29.5 inches deep, 24.5 inches wide, and 26.5 inches high. They have an arm height of 21.5 inches, a seat height of 16.5 inches, and a seat depth of 20.5 inches. The upholstery was redone in the past decade, though there are some minor spots on the fabric. The frames also show some light scratches and scuffs. Overall, this important pair of lounge chairs is in very good condition. Please see photos.
